1964 Irymple FC Photo Update

Well here it is folks, an undamaged copy of dad’s runners up Under 18’s team from 1964 (see original post here).  With thanks to the power of social media, some of dad’s old team mates and their family members contacted me and we now have this copy.

Very special thanks to Michael Allen and his wife Patti for taking the time to scan this image from their collection.  Also thanks to Marg Young who also took time out of her day to track down a copy from the Bottoms & Morris families.

Lost Mildura

Recently I posted a copy of this photo of dad’s Under 18’s AFL team photo from 1964 on the Facebook community page for Lost Mildura.  Through that post I was contacted by a few people that either played in the same team with dad or with the club about the same time.  One of which was Stan Middleton.  Stan a returned Vietnam veteran is a lovely man only 3 weeks older than my dad.  He shared the following memories with me as well as a new photo we have never seen before of dad during his time with Irymple Football Club.

“I knew both Sam & your Dad.  Both I think through the Irymple Footy Club & Mildura Tech.  Also they used to catch the Cardross bus to school I am sure.  I came from Cardross but played footy at Irymple.

Always liked your Dad.  A good man!  Also sad to see that Sam passed away about 5 years ago.  If I remember correctly he ran the service garage station at Irymple!  I knew Terry Bottams very well.  Terry caught our bus as well and also played footy at Irymple.

Will attach a few photos from the footy club which you may recognise many!  Your father in at least two.  One was when we unfurled the 1962 Flag in the first game of 1963.  So we definitely played together in the same team.  Often your dad was a year behind me as his birthday was January & mine December resulting in me going to the next age group a year earlier than Dad.

Here are some Mildura Tech days photos which will feature some of your Dad’s mates.  I was a year ahead so I don’t think he is in any of the photos.  Mostly my year!

Anyway Sharon will close now but be rest assured your Dad hasn’t been forgotten by many that knew him.  I am one!”

Information Update

Many thanks to Alan Holcroft who recently contacted us with some information about this photo posted in April, 2010.  He has identified the chap with Dad & Sam as Bobby Stevens from Red Cliffs, who worked with dad at Howie Bros Plumbing.

Alan also informed us that Dad had worked for Alan in about 1972 and knew dad through Alan’s friendship with Sam and Pam Dichiera.

More Adelaide 1966

Just found some time to add a few more photos from the Adelaide trip that dad & mum took in 1966.  Dad would have been 20 years old in these photos and mum 17 years old.  Top left photo shows dad on the beach holding a small shark, top right photo shows Terry Bottams (front of photo) looking at the same shark.  I believe it was just found on the beach, not caught.

These next two shots are of my mother climbing out on to rocks for a photo.  🙂

And this photo of dad is obviously from the same day, sight seeing somewhere else.

Irymple Football Club – 1964

Well I have a sporting photo of dad to post, and if you knew dad, you know he loved his sports.  This photo is from when dad played in the Under 18’s team for the Irymple Football Club (Swallows), and the team were season Runners Up in 1964.  Unfortunately this photo was damaged by elements & bugs when it went undiscovered that the frame glass had broken.  It upsets me that one of the faces obscured by the damage is that of dad’s close friend Terry Bottams.  I am endeavouring to see if I can get a clean copy of it.

Notice dad’s surname is spelt incorrectly as “Dischiera”.  🙂

I just wanted to add that dad was a huge fan of the Irymple Football Club for many years to come and his brothers Vince & Sam Dichiera played for the club also.  Uncle Vince was a very good player in his day and I remember watching him play many games.  We spent many a weekend down at the field and the old clubhouse with dad, family and friends.  They were special times and I remember them fondly, tooting on the horn when the team scored a goal.  Soft drink & chips for us kids, rolling down the hill, running around on the field between quarters.  I do have some video footage from a grand final game in the 1970’s, there’s not much, but it does show the team lining up for the after game photo.  I will make sure I post it to the website.

Updated – Thanks to Michael Allen (a player in this team), we now have an undamaged scan of the photo.  New post is here or photo is below.

Adelaide 1966

I’ve started on my mum’s photo album now and these photos date from 1966. The location is Adelaide, a trip mum and dad made with dad’s good friend Terry Bottams and his girlfriend Paula (who would also become his wife). The home they were staying at was Paula’s fathers home.

My mum and dad met around 1964 just before mum turned 16 when she was working at Chapley’s Milk Bar in Red Cliffs. Dad then aged 18 used to come in for a milkshake in his lunch break.

You can really see Michael’s resemblance to dad in these photos. Stay tuned there are a few more from this trip to come.

Group Photo

This early group shot shows quite a few people that I don’t recognise – so will have to get to work identifying them. But it is interesting as this is one of two shots taken of this group. This shot includes Aunty Mary and a man from the back is missing (obviously taking the photo), while another poor photocopy that I have of it, shows the man in the photo and Aunty Mary is taking the photo. This version does show everyone smiling, the other version, looks quite a deal more sombre. 🙂

I’m not sure if it was taken at Nonno’s home or elsewhere.

Back L-R: Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Nonno, Unknown, Nonna, Vince, Sam (holding Vince), Unknown.
Front L-R: Cath, Mary & Pat (dad).

Thanks to Aunty Cath & Robert for this photo.

More Confirmation

Sorting through some more of the scans from Aunty Cath & Robert, I have found two more pictures from Dad’s Confirmation. Picture taken at the Gagliardi’s property in Magnolia Avenue, Mildura. The bottom picture shows dad with his Confirmation cake.

The Boys

To the family members visiting this site – here’s a picture that we need some help with. Easily recognised are Nonno, Dad (Pat) and Uncle Sam. But who are the other 2 gentlemen? Anyone have any ideas?

22/5/08 Edited to add – We think we have identified these men as Mr. Gagliardi (dad’s Confirmation Sponsor) and his father.

Pictured Back L-R are: Mr. Gagliardi’s father?, Mr. Gagliardi?, Giuseppe (Nonno).
Pictured Front L-R are: Pat, Sam.

Thanks to Aunty Cathy & Robert for this photo.

Shotgun Fella’s

Here’s another shot of Dad with Aunty Cath, this time with two gentlemen and a shotgun. I’ve spoken to Aunty Cath and she doesn’t recognise who they are, so we are currently trying to find out.

Thanks to Aunty Cathy & Robert for this photo.

This photo shows dad with his Confirmation Sponsor. On speaking to one of my aunts she thinks the sponsor may have been a Mr. Gagliardi. However will have to confirm this and update at a later date.

22/5/2008 Edited to add – After a recent visit with Aunty Tosti, Aunty Cath has confirmed that dad’s Confirmation Sponsor was Mr. Gagliardi.
