Happy Birthday Dad

Happy Birthday Dad.  Time just goes by so quickly now and we miss you more than ever.  All our love always.

This is a postcard that Dad sent to me for my 8th birthday, while he was on his 1976 European trip.  I was going to just add the front of the postcard only, but I thought it was nice to read something dad wrote to us way back then.

Luna Park 1967

Here’s a favourite couples photo of mine, its of mum & dad at Luna Park, Melbourne.  The photo was taken about 1967 on a trip they went on before they were married.  And there’s those legs on mum again  :), this is one that has always made me jealous I didn’t end up with pins like these.  A very cute photo don’t you think?

More Adelaide 1966

Just found some time to add a few more photos from the Adelaide trip that dad & mum took in 1966.  Dad would have been 20 years old in these photos and mum 17 years old.  Top left photo shows dad on the beach holding a small shark, top right photo shows Terry Bottams (front of photo) looking at the same shark.  I believe it was just found on the beach, not caught.

These next two shots are of my mother climbing out on to rocks for a photo.  🙂

And this photo of dad is obviously from the same day, sight seeing somewhere else.

Adelaide 1966

I’ve started on my mum’s photo album now and these photos date from 1966. The location is Adelaide, a trip mum and dad made with dad’s good friend Terry Bottams and his girlfriend Paula (who would also become his wife). The home they were staying at was Paula’s fathers home.

My mum and dad met around 1964 just before mum turned 16 when she was working at Chapley’s Milk Bar in Red Cliffs. Dad then aged 18 used to come in for a milkshake in his lunch break.

You can really see Michael’s resemblance to dad in these photos. Stay tuned there are a few more from this trip to come.

Sydney Trip – 1962

I received this photo quite a while ago from Andrew Tosti. It was taken in Sydney when dad and Uncle Sam visited their Uncle Peter & Aunt Maria Tosti who live in Sydney. Uncle Tosti had taken them down to see Coogee Beach. Featured is dad sitting on the wall holding a radio, the young girl is their cousin Sandra Tosti, then Uncle Sam looking cool in sunnies and Uncle Tosti.

L-R: Pat Dichiera (Dad), Sandra Tosti, Sam Dichiera, Peter Tosti.

Looking at this photo, Sandra looks to be about 3yo, Andrew mentioned the photo was possibly taken in 1961. But then I remembered I had the photo below of Dad and a baby, who Aunty Cath thought might be cousin Andrew. Well I pulled it out tonight, to see that dad is wearing exactly the same shirt with the sleeves pulled up – so it looks like the photo with his baby cousin Andrew was taken the same day and seeing Andrew was born in 1962 – looks like we have the year both photos were taken.

That makes dad about 16 years old in these photos.

Many thanks to Andrew Tosti for supplying the group photo and information. And thanks to Aunty Cath for supplying the second photo. Yesterday I received more photos from this trip from Aunty Cath, so I will post them over the next few days.

Luna Park

This photo probably doesn’t need too much intro to some. It features dad and his cousins on a visit to Luna Park, Melbourne. It was included in the State Library of Victoria’s “Victorians on Vacation” Exhibition from Nov 2007 to Apr 2009, which along with being displayed in Melbourne also travelled some regional Victorian galleries. I was lucky enough to see it on display at Mildura Arts Centre during it’s six week stay from Oct to Nov 2008 (photo on display in Mildura).

The Sunraysia Daily along with 2 other newspapers & WINTV also did a story on the photo and the reunion of 4 of the surviving cousins of the photo more than 40 years later. Sunraysia Daily front page – 4th October, 2008 and inside story.

Below is a scan of an original of the image (one of a few). I say that, as it appears that when this photo was taken (not that many of the guys can remember much about it), there were at least 3 or more copies of the image produced in postcard like form. My mum has dad’s copy of it obviously, the museum another copy (we think from Nonno) and I think there is at least another copy floating around that we know of.

Thanks so much to Sam Dichiera (dad’s cousin) for all the info on this photo. It’s such a great photo.

Backseat L-R: Jim Mazza, Vince Dichiera, Pasquale Dichiera (dad).
Frontseat L-R: Jim Crisera, Sam Dichiera (dad’s brother).
